President’s Letter                Renewal in Uncertain Times

Sweet Darkness

When your eyes are tired
the world is tired also.

When your vision has gone
no part of the world can find you.

Time to go into the dark
where the night has eyes
to recognize its own.

There you can be sure
you are not beyond love.

The dark will be your womb tonight.

The night will give you a horizon
further than you can see.

You must learn one thing.
The world was made to be free in.

Give up all the other worlds
except the one to which you belong.

Sometimes it takes darkness and the sweet
confinement of your aloneness
to learn

anything or anyone
that does not bring you alive

is too small for you.

n David Whyte

Dear AGAP Members,

Knowing that many of us are frightfully aware of the anxiety in the world today, and may be feeling its resulting restraints personally and professionally, it may seem beside the point to offer you this warm invitation to the AGAP Forum 2009 in Zurich September 9-12.

But believing renewal in uncertain times is vital, I hope you will take to heart the opportunity to be with us in Zurich for a time of reconnection to the essential source of our work and lives: ourselves and our analytic roots.

Your colleagues on the Program Committee and the Executive Committee are working carefully to prepare a time and space of reflection, inspiration and belonging in hopes that each participant will return home with a renewed sense of what frees and brings alive.

Whether we travel in company or not, the journey is ours alone and we hope you will make this Forum a part of your journey as we gather to this special place of belonging!

This newsletter contains the ONLY registration information you will receive by post. To receive the discount on fees registration must be in by July 1! We are looking forward to an enriching time of renewal.

With warmest spring greetings from Zurich,

Deborah Egger, President

EXCO Transitions

Recent Election

Call For Candidates

The ExCo welcomes Craig Stephenson onto the committee after he was recently elected by circular vote to replace Ursula Ulmer/ Connie Steiner. Craig has been on the AGAP Ethics Committee since his election in 2004 at Barcelona, and was instrumental in putting together the Ethics Guidelines and Procedures. He has resigned that position. Our first meeting with him, in Zurich, in March, demonstrated to us the wisdom of his election to the ExCo, and we are looking forward to his presence and contributions in future meetings.

The ExCo would like to announce 4 vacancies as per the date of the AGAP Business Meeting in Montreal, 2010.

We hope that a number of you will consider running. To better maintain the international standard, in Montreal the ExCo will propose an increase of the budget for travel allowances. Besides being willing to meet in Zurich about 3 long weekends each year, candidates should have email and internet access.

If you are interested and/or want details, please contact the President: deborah.egger@agap.info

VENUE  The venue of this year’s Forum is the historical Helferei, where the protestant theologian Ulrich Zwingli (b1438) worked, and from which he departed to meet his death fighting in the famous Battle of Kappel in 1551. In the heart of Zurich’s Niederdorf, the Helferei adjoins the chapel to the Romanesque Grossmünster, the erstwhile monastery and according to legend built by Charlemagne. Our venue is not only steeped in history, but is easy walking distance to other historical points, shopping, dining and strolls along the Limmat and shores of the Lake of Zurich.

Ethics Committee

John A. Desteian, Liaison

The Ethics Committee is presently one person short of being fully populated because Craig Stephenson resigned after his election to the Executive Committee. The committee is intended to be evenly balanced between women and men; therefore, we are seeking a male AGAP member who would like to serve. The ExCo, according to the constitution, votes on replacements to the committee between Gen-

eral Assembly meetings. Email access and address are necessary. Please email me by June 15, 2009, at john.desteian@agap.info if you would like to stand for election to the vacancy. We want to thank Craig for his participation in committee activities, and for his counsel on the preparation of AGAP’s Ethics Guidelines and Procedures, which are available for download at www.agap.info.

Meet the ExCo
Jutta von Buchholtz

At the last AGAP Forum almost three years ago, I was so moved and stimula- ted to be with colleagues and old friends that I commented to the AGAP ExCo about the happy experience I had had. I was then invited to stand for election to the ExCo—and was elected, much to my surprise, at the AGAP meeting in South Africa. Since then I have traveled to ExCo meetings in Zurich three to four times a year. I love my time with colleagues—hard work and much fun, too!

I was born in Germany at the end of WWII. We were refugees, moved around a great deal—hard times. In the late fifties I won a scholarship for one year in the USA—that changed my life. A few years later I married an American and moved to Birmingham, Alabama. I have been married twice, have four children, three grandchildren and, to my surprise, am still living in Alabama. I also earned a PhD in Medieval Literature. A Master’s degree in Counseling and Therapy came as part of my mid-life transition which also sent me, emotionally very wounded, to the Jung Institute in Kusnacht. After my graduation from the Institute I started a practice as Jungian analyst in Birmingham. I also see clients on a regular on-going basis in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Pensacola, Florida. My clients at times refer to me as the “gypsy analyst.” I have been involved in training Jungian analysts both at the Institute in Kusnacht, at ISAP and with the Interregional Society of Jungian Analysts in the USA. I enjoy giving seminars, talks and lectures— love to cook, putter in the garden and play with my grandchildren and dog.

Treasurer’s report

Stefan Boëthius, Treasurer

In 2008 AGAP closed with a surplus of CHF 6,037.93 (budget CHF 8,250.00). The total income amounted to CHF 55,689.95 (budget CHF 51,500.00) and the total expenses added up to CHF 49,652.02 (budget CHF 43,250.00). There were no mentionable deviations to the budget on the income side. On the expense side there were higher travel costs for Executive Officers due to increased AGAP business in Zurich, details of which you will receive in the June Update (+CHF 5,365.85). Additional reserves were created for Membership Support and Membership Services (+CHF 1,000.00) and for coming meetings with the CG Jung-Institute (+CHF 3,000.00). By December 31st, 2008 the equity amounted to CHF 22,673.95. The AGAP finances are in good condition.

News from ISAPZURICH

Ursula Ulmer, Vice President

The year at a glance The ISAP Council, formerly called Officers Committee, is pleased to report that things go well at ISAP, and we are grateful for the prevailing good spirit among our some 80 students and trainers alike. The level of cooperation by all involved has made it a pleasure to serve in the leadership. The challenges we face ahead are daunting but with the spirit of participation ISAP is a place that is thriving.

We can report, too, that several new initiatives have been launched at ISAP. A Research Committee was founded with Dr. Raffaella Colombo as chairperson. This new project will involve students as well as analysts.

A Publications Committee was created with the purpose of encouraging ISAP Participants to publish books and articles in both English and German. Nancy Cater of Spring Journal Books joined this committee after having undertaken the publication of ISAP’s first book, Intimacy: Venturing the Uncertainties of the Heart. This volume inaugurates the series that will collect the lectures of the Jungian Odyssey from year to year. The Zurich Lecture Series in Analytical Psychology will be launched on October 2 - 3 with John Hill lecturing on the subject of home and this series, too, will result in a book.

AGAP members from abroad continue to join us as well appreciated guest lecturers. ISAP’s library continues to grow under Helga Kopecky’s direction. Again last year the Jungian Odyssey was sold out. This year’s Odyssey will have as it venue the historical Hotel Waldhaus in the breath-taking Engadine valley. (See ad in this issue.)

Governance At our Annual Assembly in February 2009 we paid tribute to two retiring members of the leadership: Doris Lier, Director of Admissions and Nathalie Baratoff, Director of Program. These highly esteemed colleagues have served ISAP relentlessly since its beginning. Newly elected to replace them are Monique Wulkan for the Admissions Committee and Urs Mehlin, Program Committee. We are very grateful for their good will and dedication to these essential structures in ISAP.

International Part-Resident Program All interested AGAP members are urged to contact us about the possibility of participating as supervisors in ISAP’s International Part-Resident (IPR) training. IPR students may return to their home countries to fulfill certain requirements for the 2nd half of training – provided they have fulfilled residency requirements and other obligations set forth in the IPR regulations. This program is carefully structured to uphold high training standards in line with the rich tradition of training in Zurich and we invite all AGAP analysts to join us in its execution.

Training Candidate Cooperative ISAP now offers to other IAAP Training Societies a cooperative model of propaedeutical level training. This is exclusively for candidates who have been accepted in other IAAP trainings and would like to take advantage of the full time program of lectures/seminars offered 14-weeks a semester at ISAP in Zurich. We welcome all enquiries concerning this program, which has proven very successful in collaboration with Japan.

Finances While ISAP continues to run as a self-sustaining enterprise, it has not been immune from the painful and even catastrophic events that are taking place in our world. However, due to timely and decisive action by our treasurer, a continuing flow of generous donations and the financial success of the Jungian Odyssey, as well as a healthy number of students and analysts supporting ISAP, the school’s financial health is stable and promising.

Updates For details on our election results, a directory of analysts, the current semester program, and other updates please visit

Meet the ExCo
Jacqueline Wright

Interview with Diane Cousineau Brutsche

What was your background before training at the Institute in Küsnacht?

I started as an elementary teacher and went on to obtain a doctorate in higher education and counseling. Before going to Zurich I worked in a University, focusing on experiential education, individual learning and teaching strategies for adults. This led naturally to my interest in Jung, because it involved developing strategies for meeting the needs of individuals as opposed to serving the traditional system of education.

Where are you established now?

After graduating from the Institute in 1992 I moved to Atlanta, Georgia, primarily because my son, daughter-in-law and first grandchild lived there. Unfortunately, shortly after I relocated, they moved away. I have three children and now three grandchildren, all of whom live in other states.

What are your Jungian interests?

The myth of Eros and Psyche has caught my interest in the last few years. This has led me into more general topics related to love and relationships. I really enjoy working with couples. I have also been doing lectures and workshops on this topic and am in the process of writing a book on couples and marriage.

You’ve also gotten involved in other professional activities.

I’m serving in a number of capacities at the IRSJA—currently as Director of Admissions and teaching in local seminars. My association with the IRSJA has provided a professional community and collegial contact that I really needed after returning to the States.

In 2007 at Cape Town, you joined the ExCo. What motivated you to add this to your responsibilities?
I had attended an AGAP Forum and was impressed with the vitality and energy in the ExCo as well as with the important and diverse work it was engaged in. I knew that it would also provide a chance to reconnect with colleagues and friends from Zurich. It has definitely added a lot more to my
plate, but it has met my expectations and greatly enriched my professional and personal life.
